Save Afghan Minorities

How this project began - the most vulnerable

In 2015, Manmeet Singh Bhullar took on the cause of helping Sikh and Hindu minorities in Afghanistan. Living in the province of Helmand, they endured a daily reality of facing persecution at the hands of the Taliban. Void of their basic rights of safety and religious freedoms, they endured physical violence, sexual harassment, and denial of education for children. Manmeet’s goal was to bring them to a safe place. Over a few short months, Manmeet worked tirelessly to temporarily move families to India and then to their permanent homes in Canada. Through this project, approximately 250 people (65 families) have been relocated to India. in March 2019, the first families were welcomed to Canada and in a few short months, this entire cohort will have arrived in Canada. For the first time in their lives, children are being educated, women feel safe leaving their homes, and men are learning new skills and trades.

Current project status

Today, the project continues under the leadership of Co-Chairs Jasjeet Ajimal and Ben Li. They worked directly with Manmeet to begin this work and have since, shepherded strategy, policy, refugee applications, local and international coordination, and government and stakeholder engagements, enabling refugees to arrive and begin a new life in Canada.

Each one of the families that has arrived in Canada was sponsored through the Government of Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. Many community members, organizations, and Canadian Members of Parliament have given their support to this project.

After the attack at an Afghanistan Gurdwara in 2020 and the devastation that Afghanistan endured in 2021, this project has grown in scope and we are working actively with the Government of Canada to assist many other families that have since fled Afghanistan.
